Santa is late this Christmas!

Santa was supposed to bring a bicycle each for my daughters this time around. But he didn't arrive in time for Christmas. The snow was perhaps holding him back. His assistant managed to deliver some chocolates with the glad tidings that Santa will come with the promised presents in a day or two. We don't have the Chimney for Santa to slide in, nor the stockings on the door (the cycles wouldn't fit in anyway!). But each year, Santa watches how the kids behave and brings sweet things they desire.

Does my daughter believe all this? Well, she likes to believe, though she knows that it's her mama and papa who play her Santa each year. I like the idea of Santa too. My parents gave me no such illusion. But the image of santa riding the reindeer sled through snow flakes and across skies, carrying gifts for children world-over, sliding down the chimney with his big fat belly on Xmas eve, leaving gifts in pretty stockings...well, some imagination, but I think children like to go with it, just like they love fairytales. And of course, they grow over it with time.

I had a lovely christmas with family and friends at my in-laws place - kids dressed as santa claus, christmas tree all decked up, twinkling stars & serial lights, bamboo crib with baby Jesus and the rest of the cast watching-over, a feast with rich plum cake, white forest, mom-made mushroom & cauli-flower biryani, pepper chicken not turkey (cooked on firewood for that smoked flavour), FIL-made naturally fermented nutmeg wine (2008), chocolate & butter-scotch icecream topped with apple and banana...and the works!

The only sad part was that Becky, my 2 year old, was unwell and couldn't enjoy it much, although she did try to play along. She's getting better though!

I'm now looking forward to the New Year. Hoping to start with a bang! Wishing you all a very happy and prosperous 2011!

This is in continuation to the comment I posted on Aparna's Blog. I should perhaps say "inspired" cause I've been so un-inspired and tied-up for the last 11/2 months, drawing a nil on my blogpost. So thanks Aparna, for bringing this post out of me :D

It's always good to see the grown up kids forcing themselves/pretendin that there is a santa. I just remembered the movie 'Life is beautiful'. It's good that we believe there is a superpower watching over us.

Biriyani cooked in firewood..woww..

Lovely post. Good to know you had a very nice time with your in-laws. I am glad to know that your daughter is getting well, and with arrival of the much awaited cycles from Santa she going to be up and bouncing.
I knew your work must have kept you very busy to blog.
Take care.

Wow! It seems you had a really good time unlike me!
We bought a giant tree five tears ago and all these years we used to have fun decorating it. Then we changed house. And now the same grand tree gets on the way. It completely overwhelms my small drawing room.
This year we went out to have wonderful dinner. My husband who was touring came back in the afternoon and we made him terribly guilty about working on the Christmas day.
Your kids look all excited and happy. I wish you and your family a wonderful New Year ahead. God bless.

You are right! Santa is a concept.

Well, I couldn't wish you for Christmas. So, here is it. Happy New Year! :) (well in advance)

@ Jon,
It's good to keep the child in us alive, always! Life is a lot more fun that way, don't you think?! It was the pepper chicken that was cooked on firewood for that smoked flavour;P

@ rama,
Thanks, yes I had a good time :) Baby is getting better and bouncing back to her usual naughty self!

@ Sandhya,
Yes, the ring of "jingle bells" brings with it the spirit of christmas and a smile on our lips, whether young or old :) Thanks for your warm wishes!

@ Madhu,
Yeah, had a lovely christmas! And sure will try to keep the blogs coming more often, so more people notice when I'm not around ;P

@ Bikramjit,
LOL! And hope Santa heard you:D
Too bad about the headache...I know how awful it can get! Backy is doing much better now, thanks:)

@ Shilpa Garg,
And we've been OD-ing so much on rich plum and rum-berry cakes that say "cake" and I'd perhaps vanish;D Thanks for your wishes and wishing you and your family a very happy new year too!

@ Kavi,
Thank you and wishing you the same :)

@ Insignia,
I did, I did! And yes, Becky is doing much better, thanks :)

@ Aparna,
I do that sometimes, make my hubby feel guilty about ruining our holiday (if he has to go out of town unexpectedly), and he makes it up to us ;P

Ah, too bad your Xmas tree doesn't have a place in your new home. We bought a tiny Xmas tree for our daughters to decorate which we can put up just about anywhere.

Thanks very much for your warm wishes and wishing you and your family a very happy new year too!

@ Nona,
Santa is such a wonderful concept! A dream come true for kids, getting wonderful gifts from their dear old santa:) Wishing you a very happy new year too!

I am on vacation so am still not regularly reading other blogger's posts. Wonderful to read that you had a nice Christmas. Hopefully, your daughter is fine now. We were traveling to Mumbai on vacation so were in train but eagerly looked forward to the vacation. Kids had a great Christmas celebration in school.

I acted the Santa and gave away some gifts for my neice and nephew. They didn't care my attire and dialogue and their entire attention was on the gifts.
Was fun.

Wish you a 2011 filled with lot of yellow smileys.

@ Emmy,
Thanks for stopping by, and for your warm comments. The precious moments that we spend with our loved ones are indeed moments to cherish for a lifetime. Got to visit your blog. You seem to be doing very good for a beginner :)

@ sreejith thampi,
Played Santa, eh? Good. Yeah, for kids it's more important to know what they've got as presents than focus on the rolly-polly santa :D

Yes Santa is a beautiful childhood concept but interestingly it is not part of Christianity. Christianity as we know developed in the Middle East where there is no snow. Santa is more of a western concept that came from the nordic countries where the winters were severe and we needed someone who could deal with the terrible cold and survival in that. The concept of the Christmas tree is also not an original Christian one- it was introduced into England by Prince Albert ( Queen Victoria's husband). However I love the concept of Santa and the image of this fat jolly looking man in red riding his sleigh drawn by reindeer.

Thank you all for your comments. Just got a bit too busy to write back. Blogging has become a once-a-bluemoon activity, with hardly any time to spare. I'll drop in whenever I can and hopefully sometime soon, I'll be able to post again!

Oh yes, kids do believe about the Santa at some point of their life (till they outgrow it)
I remember how my kids told me to add some more specific items when I made a "land line call" to Santa in front of them
Some memories last.
